Trailer for Jay Chou's American movie debut, 'The Green Hornet' Released
The trailer for the "The Green Hornet" has just been released! Why are we all excited? This marks Taiwan superstar Jay Chou's debut in American cinema, taking on the role of Green Hornet's sidekick, Kato.
For those who don't know, it was no other than the legendary Bruce Lee who played the "faithful valet" back in the TV series in the 1960's.
For Jay, without a doubt, he has stated, "It's an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee."
What do we know about Kato?
The character was originally Japanese at the premiere of the radio show in 1936 but as Japanese-American relations turned sour over the years prior and leading up to Pearl Harbor, it had prompted the producers to change his nationality to Korean.
His array of skills include driving (he is the chaffeur after all), auto mechanics (he fixes up Green Hornet's car, the "Black Beauty"), and, of course, martial arts (ah duh!). What his nationality will be in the new movie is anyone's guess.
The role of Kato for the movie was originally bestowed upon Hong Kong comedian, Stephen Chow who took on a dual responsibility as director for the movie. However, due to "creative differences" with the producers, he stepped down as director but remained as Kato. A few months later, he completely exited the project. The search for a new Kato ensued until it was announced that Jay Chou was to be the new Kato in August 2009.
With that said, it would be interesting to see Jay in his first English-speaking role. Be sure to catch the movie when it is released in Jan 2011. In the meantime, check out the trailer!
PS. In our excitement, we almost forgot to mention that the starring role will be played by no other than funnyman Seth Rogen, last seen in "Zack and Miri Make a Porno", and will also co-star Cameron Diaz.
